Calling out Bill Gross?! [2015/7/9]

Bill Gross has been called out for not following through his trade idea of shorting China.

It is highly likely that the people who called out Bill Gross either do not know how to

invest or trade, or they like to complain at everything.

First, institutional trading is quite complex because it is not easy to move massive

amounts of money at once and the institution has to ensure that proper risk

management is in place.

Second, many institutions have many investment thesis and they have their own

investment decision process.

It is likely that Janus decided not to follow the short China trade either due to risk

concerns or they had other perceived higher profitable trades.

People should really examine their track records before they call out Bill Gross. Yes, he

has messed up recently and got fired from PIMCO. But he is the best bond manager of

all times.

To learn about Bill Gross' amazing performance and career, please listen to Masters of Business podcast.

What I have learned today [2015/7/7]

1. World's best selling drinks are whiskey, vodka, and Liquer. Whiskey is understandable given it is highly priced but liquer. Diageo owns Johnnie Walker and Smiroff.

2. Trash pick up Uber will definitely transform the recycling and waste business. With demand pick up, we will have less waste, cleaner streets, and happier people. We really need this as soon as possible with all the trashed furniture in LA.

3. 1 out of 3000 junior mining companies go from early stage exploration to production,

4. In 2014, consumers spent 5 billion on digital gift cards and online gift card sales are growing at 29% a year.

5. Every dollar lost online due to fraud can cost $3 to the retailer. We need to increase digital security because it is easier to commit fraud and harder to catch. Also, consumers should be wary and report immediately if they see anything suspicious.

6. Netflix is releasing its own movies. Yup, it's the battle of the contents in media. I expect more original and high quality series and movies from Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix. I hope people don't do too much binge watching.

What I have learned today [2015/7/4]

1. According to KPMG, 30% of the top 50 firm's website are not mobile friendly. This is an issue because personally, I do more mobile search these days and if the website is not mobile friendly, I just close it. So firms need to fix this given that the benefits are probably much greater than the costs.

2.  It is hard to take good pictures even with good camera. It takes lot of learning and practice :D

3. Cleaning barbecue grill is hard and kills the joy of having a barbecue :p

4. Amazon really has an amazing selection.

5. Law school applications are going down.
